Huntsville, Texas is located a short one and a half hour drive north of Houston.  It was the home of General Houston, his wife Margaret, and a bunch of kids.  General Houston and his family lived at Woodland for many years while the General was Senator from the State of Texas in Washington.  He referred to this time in his life as some of the fondest of times.  The Woodland home is located on the campus of Sam Houston State University and is a beautiful example of the classic "Dog Run" architecture so popular in early Texas.

The day trip tour includes a stop at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum also located on the campus along with a tour of the grounds of the Museum.

The "Steamboat House" was located in Huntsville and has been moved to the Museum property.  This is the house where General Sam Houston died.  He caught  a cold on a walk home and later died.  As Margaret and others attended the old General it was reported that he awoke from his fever, looked at Margaret and said  " Texas, Margaret, Texas" and then passed away.

Sam Houston Gravesite

Visit the Oaklawn Cemetery where several Texas Heroes are buried, including General Sam Houston.   See the grave maker sculpted by ----------, the same artist that completed the Alamo memorial in San Antonio's Alamo Plaza.

And last by not least, we will visit the colossus state of General Houston that stands over 60 feet tall.   The statue is the creation of Huntsville's own, David Atickes.  Mr. Atickes has gone on to complete several Giant Statue Gardens, one being the Presidential Parks, located near Mt. Rushmore and another near Williamsburg, Virginia.  The Huntsville Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center and one of the best Texana Gift Shops in Texas

An added bonus to the trip can be a stop at one of the area's best Outlet Mall, the Conroe Outlet Mall.  The Mall is half way between Houston and Huntsville and it can in incorporated in the trip, either coming or going.

Your Huntsville Day Tour from the Houston can be a highlight to any meeting or trip to Houston.
